How to play the 3 2 5 card game (Teen Do Paanch)

3-2-5, also called Teen Do Paanch, is a three-player trick-taking card game popular in India. Each player has a target number of tricks, and you score by beating it. This page is the short version. The full rules guide has a worked scoring example.

How many cards are used?

30 cards are in play: A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8 of every suit, plus the 7 of spades and the 7 of hearts. Each of the three players is dealt 5 cards first, the trump picker chooses trump from those, then 5 more cards are dealt. Everyone holds 10 cards.

What do 3, 2 and 5 mean?

They are the tricks each player must win in a round: the player left of the dealer (who picks trump) needs 5, the next player needs 3, and the dealer needs 2.

Winning a trick

Follow the lead suit if you can. The highest trump wins the trick, otherwise the highest card of the lead suit wins.

Pull and steal

Players who beat their quota can pull a facedown card from an opponent and give one of their own back. This is what makes Teen Do Paanch different from other trick games.

Scoring

You score tricks won minus your quota. Winning 7 tricks on a quota of 5 scores +2. The first player to reach 5 points wins the match.
